My 3 days in Agafay, Morocco
Agafay Desert, located just outside Marrakech, offers a unique escape from the city’s hustle. Unlike the vast Sahara, Agafay is a rocky desert with stunning landscapes that feel both raw and peaceful. My three days there revealed a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and thrilling activities that make Agafay a must-visit destination.
If you’re looking for a short escape that feels completely different from your typical beach holiday, Agafay in Morocco is such a good option.
Just 30 minutes from Marrakech Menara Airport, you get that “desert experience” without the long journey to the Sahara which makes it perfect for a long weekend or a quick luxury getaway.
I recently spent three days here, and instead of filling the time with sunbathing, I focused on culture, experiences, and slowing down and it completely changed the feel of the trip.
Why Choose Agafay?
Agafay is often described as a “stone desert” so don’t expect endless sand dunes. What you do get is:
Wide open landscapes
Beautiful luxury camps and boutique stays
Incredible sunsets
Easy access from Marrakech
The option to combine relaxation with cultural experiences
It’s ideal if you want something a little more meaningful than just lying by a pool all day.
A Moroccan Cooking Experience
One of the highlights of the trip was a traditional cooking morning.
This wasn’t just a quick demonstration it was hands-on, learning how to prepare authentic Moroccan dishes from scratch. It gives you a real appreciation for the flavours, spices, and techniques that make Moroccan food so special.
And of course… sitting down to eat everything afterwards made it even better.
Slowing Down in the Desert
Afternoons in Agafay are all about switching off.
After mornings spent exploring, I used the afternoons to relax by the pool, take in the views, and just enjoy the quiet. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down no rush, no packed schedule.
🌿 A Visit to Saffron Paradise
This was such a unique experience and something a bit different.
At Saffron Paradise, you learn how saffron one of the world’s most expensive spices is grown and harvested. It’s a small, authentic experience that connects you to the local culture in a way you don’t always get on a typical holiday.
Evenings at Boheme Agafay
Evenings in Agafay are where the magic really happens.
Boheme is the perfect spot for a relaxed but stylish night great food, ambient lighting, and those unforgettable desert sunsets. It’s one of those places where you can dress up a little, unwind, and really soak in the atmosphere.
Lunch in the Atlas Mountains at La Kasbah d'Ourika
A short drive from Agafay takes you into a completely different landscape.
Lunch at La Kasbah d’Ourika was set in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains peaceful, scenic, and a great way to experience a more traditional side of Morocco.
Exploring Ourika Valley
If you’re staying in Agafay, a trip to the Ourika Valley is a must.
The contrast between the dry desert and the lush greenery of the valley is incredible. Think mountain views, rivers, and small villages it adds so much depth to the trip and stops it from feeling one-dimensional.
Final Thoughts: Who This Trip is Perfect For
Agafay is ideal if you:
Want a short, easy escape from the UK
Don’t want long transfer times
Prefer experiences over just sunbathing
Love a mix of relaxation and culture
Are looking for something a bit different
It’s not your typical mini break and that’s exactly why I’d recommend it.
